Support Services

Support Services

The MND Association Support Services provides an information, support and counselling service to all people in South Australia whose lives have been affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

A diagnosis of MND presents many challenges and patients and families frequently state that they feel quite overwhelmed and anxious at this time. It is the aim of the Motor Neurone Disease Association to provide information about MND and its implications, the sources of help and support within the community as well as the resources and activities available within the Association.

Appropriate information given with emotional support can help patients make more informed decisions about their care and future plans. The Support Service is ongoing through the experience of MND, so that patients and families do not feel isolated or alone and have the opportunity to discuss the emotional and practical issues that arise.

The Support Coordinator is available for:

> Meeting with patients and families in the office, at home or in hospital.

> Information/ Education sessions for interested people, service providers and community groups. These sessions often include the support of other health professionals who have a particular interest in MND. These may include a physiotherapist, speech pathologist or dietician.

> Liaising with other agencies that provide care, equipment and support.

> It is the commitment of the Support Service that patients, families, carers and health professionals in regional areas have the support that they need. This includes workshops and home visits where possible.

> To assist in any way to increase the awareness and knowledge of MND so that patients and families feel better supported and understood.

As the effects of MND vary from one person to another, so do their needs and wishes. Sometimes it can be helpful to talk through feelings and worries with someone outside the immediate family.

Please feel free to contact John Gilligan, the Client Support Coordinator, at any time.
